Would you like to join London’s leading nursing team? We are looking for a Health Care Assistant to join our day case surgical ward, which is a 15 bedded ward specialising in providing care to a variety of surgical specialties, including: spinal injections, minor orthopaedic, ophthalmic, ENT, vascular, minor urology, gynae, and plastics/cosmetic surgery.

The successful applicant will have been working in a similar environment and will be up to date in current practices. Experience will extend to working within a busy ward and professional, multi-disciplinary teams. What would be my responsibilities as the Health Care Assistant: 

  • To assist in the planning of patient care and the delivery of an excellent care service.
  • To participate in the efficient operational management of the department, providing support to the shift leaders and Ward Manager
  • To undertake tasks and responsibilities assigned by the Ward Manager supporting the management and development of the nursing care and the delivery of the service
  • To provide support to the Ward Manager, Deputy ward Manager and shift leaders
  • To undertake a link nurse role(s) for designated clinical responsibilities, attend meetings and complete associated actions attached to the link nurse role
  • To ensure the provision of a welcoming, caring and safe environment for patients and their families.
  • To maintain a clean and safe environment including but not limited to: patients’ room, ward hallway, store rooms & nurses station.
  • To participate in the maintenance of the stores, supplies and utilise consumables effectively.
  • To be flexible in working patterns, including weekends, depending on the need and ward activities
  • To be flexible and adaptable in working in different departments when needed and during department closures.
  • To escort patients to other departments and on as needs basis to other hospitals.
  • To complete all nursing documentation in line with the Hospitals policies, procedures and protocols.
  • To undertake daily, weekly and monthly safety checks on the ward when assigned accordingly
  • To chaperone / assist consultants with procedures and assist nurses when carry out nursing interventions.
  •  To undertake weight and height measurements, collection and sampling of urine, MRSA swab, CPE swab, bloods and accurately record all findings.  Any abnormalities to be reported to the nurses.
  • To undertake the clinical tasks involved with admissions, preparing patients for investigations and procedures and going to theatre, doing appropriate referrals to other health care staff and facilities and discharging patients.
  • Adhere to Hospital’s Policy  for Manual Handling
  • To maintain confidentiality surrounding patient treatment at all times.
  • To have knowledge of and adhere to the Department and Hospital policy and professional standards.
  • To be aware and comply with all Infection Control policies and ensure best practice is maintained to ensure low infection rates.
  • To ensure compliance with mandatory training
  • To ensure the required competency are obtained for job role
  • To ensure awareness of incidents and complaints in the hospital and comply to recommendations and shared learning to prevent reoccurrence.

Am I the right person for this HCA post?

  • Good level of education
  • Basic computer skills
  • NVQ level 3 or equivalent
  • The Care certificate is desirable
  • Experience of team work and completing set objectives
  • Problem solving and ability to communicate with clarity and intelligibility in both written and spoken English
  • Able to demonstrate good literacy and numeracy skills
  • Good attendance record
  • Flexibility to change shifts when department needs change
  • Enthusiastic, Reliable and able to work under pressure
  • Neat and tidy appearance
